Greenlandic Dogsled Expedition

For thousands of years, the Inuits of East Greenland have travelled during winter by dogsled. The Greenlandic sled dog is renowned for its strength and resilience, capable of pulling its weight all day long. Modern East Greenlandic hunters typically work with teams of 10 to 14 dogs, allowing for a wonderful and relaxed mode of travel through Greenland’s spectacular alpine landscape. This journey offers an authentic and unplugged experience, exploring small hunters’ settlements and crossing the frozen ocean to glaciers that calve into the sea. Travellers will learn about Inuit culture, visit ancient winter house ruins, and marvel at sharp mountain peaks and icebergs embedded in the winter sea ice. The trip includes short snowshoe walks, nights spent in tents, and traditional modes of travel, making it a truly unique adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kulusuk

Fly from Iceland or Nuuk to Kulusuk, Greenland. Upon arrival, walk from the airport to the village and spend the night in a local house.

Day 2 : Kulusuk to Tiniteqilaq Island and Sermiliqaq

In the early morning, meet the mushers and dog teams to commence the adventure. Cross the strait from Kulusuk to Apusiaajik Island, known for its towering peaks and a glacier flowing into the ocean. Continue north, gliding between islands, and arrive at a hunting cabin on Tiniteqilaq Island. Proceed to the village of Sermiliqaq, home to around 200 residents who rely on fishing and hunting. Spend the night in a tent near Sermiliqaq. Distance: 40 km.

Day 3 : Sermiliqaq to Knud Rasmussen Glacier

Depart Sermiliqaq in the morning, following the coast to the impressive Karale fjord. Surrounded by mountains rising to 2,000 metres, continue to the mighty Knud Rasmussen glacier—a highlight of the journey. Stand before the glacier, dwarfed by its grandeur, and camp overnight in the Karale fjord. Distance: 30 km.

Day 4 : Ikatek Airbase

From Karale fjord, continue to the Ikatek strait, passing a series of steep and uniquely shaped mountains. In the afternoon, reach the abandoned Ikatek airbase, constructed by the US military during World War II. Explore snow-covered vehicles and take a snowshoe walk along the deserted runway. Camp nearby. Distance: 25 km.

Day 5 : Ikatek to Apusiaajik

Travel south past endless island mountains as the mushers guide the team to the north coast of Apusiaajik. Along the way, spot seals by their holes in the ice and listen for ptarmigan males declaring their territory. Spend the night in a tent. Distance: 30 km.

Day 6 : Return to Kulusuk

Cross Apusiaajik Island’s west side, traverse a small glacier, and head towards Kulusuk, arriving in the early afternoon. Enjoy the warmth of a local house and savour a good meal. Distance: 20 km.

Day 7 : Snowshoe Walk in Kulusuk

This day is reserved as a contingency for weather delays. If the itinerary proceeds as planned, we use the day to explore Kulusuk and its surroundings on snowshoes.

Day 8 : Departure

Return to Iceland or Nuuk.
