Johanna's story
Johanna was born and raised on Pellworm in North Germany — one of the flattest islands in the world, sitting about a meter below sea level. On Pellworm, the highest points aren’t mountains or hills, but the dikes that encircle the island, holding back the North Sea during storm floods. Growing up between wide horizons, wind, and water shaped her deep respect for nature and its quiet strength. Family holidays always led north to Scandinavia — preferably somewhere remote, with as much untouched nature as possible.
Today, she lives slightly further north in Denmark with her Icelandic husband and their son, Loki. Family holidays now take them to Iceland, where flat horizons are replaced by volcanoes, glaciers, and raw, untamed landscapes. She combines a love for remote Arctic wilderness with quieter passions like gardening and winter bathing — altitude optional.
East Greenland holds a particularly special place in her heart. Its vastness and silence still feel almost unreal to her, and she quietly cried tears of happiness when she first had the opportunity to work there.
With a background in economics, marketing, and tourism, Johanna is responsible for all operations at Arctic Hiking & Expeditions. She is most likely the voice answering e-mail inquiries, assisting with bookings, coordinating logistics — and picking up the phone when things get urgent. She cares deeply about creating safe, well-organized, and meaningful journeys in some of the most remote places on Earth.
If you reach out, chances are you will be speaking with Johanna — and she will be just as excited about your journey north as you are.
